Gay men’s sexuality

More needs to be known about gay men’s sexuality for public and sexual health programs, to understand human sexuality and homosexuality in general, and for improving the lives of gay men. A small number of larger scale and fairly rigorous studies of gay men’s sexuality have been surveys tending toward demographic and epidemiological concerns. These provide limited data on sexuality per se. Most of the published literature on gay men’s sexuality comes from smaller studies concerned with highly specific aspects of gay men’s sexuality—like condom‐related thoughts and behaviors, sexual identity, social organization of daily life, and so on. This essay summarizes the extant conceptual approaches to and literature on gay men’s sexuality. The essay is also intended to point toward the need for further research on and understanding of gay men’s sexuality.
